On 27 September, the national day action called by various trade unions, including a General Strike from CGT and Solidaridad Obrera (SO), aimed to make a significant leap in the fight against genocide, to support the Palestinian resistance, and to demand that the government sever all military, commercial, and diplomatic ties with the Zionist state.
From the outset, Corriente Roja placed great importance on this call, viewing it as a state day of action for two key reasons. Firstly, because its demands directly challenged the complicity of the PSOE-Sumar government with Israel; and secondly, because it emphasised the need for the working class to recognise that this is not merely a war, but an act of genocide. The Spanish state is complicit in this genocide, and the central task is to hold our own governments in Europe and the USA accountable. The working class is the only force capable of challenging these governments by stating, “Either you stop the genocide, or we stop the country!”
That was—and remains—the battle that the working class must engage in, which is why we advocated for a substantial day of action and mobilisation, rather than a General Strike that, with all due respect, would have been impossible to execute successfully. For a General Strike to truly deserve that title and function as a genuine tool of power for our class, it must be organised from the grassroots up and constructed democratically, involving the entire working class and discussed in all workplaces, educational institutions, and communities. Thus, Corriente Roja supports the decision of the Comisiones de Base (Co.Bas) union to call upon its members and delegates to organise and prepare a day of action in their workplaces.
In this context, the events of 27th September demonstrated that all conditions were met to support this day of action. The various gatherings that took place throughout the day at different companies, educational institutions, hospitals, and working-class neighbourhoods, although symbolic, were very significant in mobilising the working class and helped prepare for the large demonstrations that occurred in the evening across the country.
We must summon all the unions, left-wing political organisations, neighbourhood associations and other social movements because the struggle for the freedom of Palestine is the struggle of the entire working class.
